Dental Implants

Dental Implants
Dental implants are a method of replacing missing teeth so that a single tooth or multiple teeth can be restored in the mouth. When I was in dental school this concept was only a dream for the future. Now it can be done.
A cylinder of titanium or a ceramic is placed into the persons bone. It is allowed to heal for several weeks or months and when it is well integrated into the bone, a crown or denture can be attached to them.
The dental implants allow the new teeth to be securely anchored to the persons bone, allowing for better function.

Kool-aid not so cool

Now that summer is here, there may be a tendency to drink more fluids. Hydration is a good thing except if it is done with sugared products. Children especially are vulnerable to products such as Kool-aid , soda pop, and even many energy drinks have large amount of sugars in them.
So drink lots of fluids, but make sure they are sugar free.

A tale of two teeth

   There were two dental patients.
One patient came in every six months for her check ups and cleanings. At one visit we found a small cavity that we repaired in a thirty minute appointment and charged the patient $120.00.
The other patient waited three years between visits and when she came in, a cavity on her tooth had gotton so bad that we had to do a root canal therapy and crown on the tooth. It took three visits and cost $1700.
Economic times are tough for many people now and many are looking for ways to save money.

Tooth Whitening
One of the easiest and cost effective make-overs someone can do is to whiten their teeth and create a bright and beautiful smile!
One of the first things anyone notices about you is your smile. A nice bright smile can indicate health, friendliness, youth and many other positive attributes.
To whiten your teeth, your dentist applies a bleaching agent (such as jellied hydrogen peroxide) to your teeth. The bleaching agent removes old stains that can darken or yellow the the teeth.

Flouride. Boon to mankind or communist plot?

Adding fluoride to drinking water has been a great aid to people in the prevention of dental disease. I think it is one of the community services accomplished by dentist that dentist should be most proud of.
The fluoride ion comes from the element fluorine. Fluorine is the 13th most common element in the earth's crust and is never encountered in its free state in nature. It exists only with other elements as a fluoride compound. This form is found in rocks and soil everywhere and as water passes over them some fluoride ions are released into the water.

Great return on investment- a dental visit.

Great return on investment-a dental visit.
What do you use everyday of your life? What do you use at every meal? What is one of the first things people look at when they meet you? What can effect your posture, sinus health, and overall well-being?
If you answered "teeth" you are correct! People use their mouths many times a day for their entire life. Most people enjoy eating, talking and being in good health. Healthy teeth and gums are necessary for all of these things.

Sugar. How can something that tastes so good be so bad?

Sugar. How can something that tastes so good be so bad?
People throughout history have loved the taste of sugar. Wars have been fought over it and some people love it more than they love their spouses. However, it causes some serious dental problems.
When the bacteria (germs) in your mouth are given sugar they use it as a food source. Their waste product is acid and this acid can eat holes in your teeth in which the bacteria can now live. This is called a cavity and has to be taken out and replaced with a filling by your dentist.

Grinding your teeth at night

Grinding your teeth at night
Alot of people clench very hard or grind their teeth at night. It can be very damaging to your teeth. It may also effect muscles in your face and neck. Many people are unaware that they do it.
If you notice chipped or brken teeth or fillings, receding gums, flattening of teeth, head or muscle aches in the morning- you may be grinding or clenching at night. Tell your dentist and they can check out your mouth for you.
One of the solutions is to wear a custom fitted mouth guard at night.

Hard or soft toothbrushes

Hard or soft toothbrushes?
Patients often ask me what type of toothbrush to use. I always recommend a soft bristle brush. To remove the germs that cause problems in the mouth, all you need is a soft bristle brush. Hard bristle brushes can actually damage your teeth and gums. I have never met a dentist or dental hygienist who recommended a hard bristle brush.
So if you have a hard bristle tooth brush, use it to clean the grout in your bathroom and switch to a soft bristle one!
